Another of the season’s Christmas portrait reveals, I had the pleasure of painting handsome Tokyo Dragon for Stephanie in Edina, Minnesota. Commissioned as a surprise gift for her sister Whitney, we discussed at length just how this portrait should be composed.
Armed only with select photos of her sister’s horse from years ago, when the pair were actively competing, none were of very high resolution. Another stipulation of the portrait was that her sister not be painted in the portrait so careful consideration to both composition and cropping was made.
The first action shot portrait I’ve had the opportunity of painting, I’m quite pleased with the results – in particular, his flowing mane, arched neck and determined eye.
I hope this piece will bring Stephanie’s sister much joy for years to come as she reminisces about Tokyo in his glory days, sailing over jumps.
