It was my absolute pleasure to paint this gorgeous boy for Stephanie from Ottawa. Commissioned for her new sister-in-law as a wedding gift, I greatly enjoyed painting Sherman, my first Leonberger.
For those of you who are not as familiar with this breed, the Leonberger is a German breed that historically was popular among European royals. This double coated mountain dog projects an abundance of pride and intelligence. Weighing in anywhere from 120-170 pounds (for the males), it's easy to see why this breed is commonly referred to as "Gentle Giant" of "Gentle Lion."
Always fun to paint a new breed of canine, this boy with his lush and layered coat, lovely expression and warm brown eyes was simply a pleasure.
Sadly Sherman is no longer with us, but his portrait will live on as a wonderful tribute of a much loved family dog.
