I'm excited to share this recent commission I completed for Mike in Mountainview, California. Intended as a surprise birthday gift for his wife of their beloved dogs, Nyla, King and Ruby, it was a pleasure to paint this portrait.
A nice change from some of my popular smaller sized portraits, this larger sized portrait measuring 24 x 36 helped showcase each of these large breed dogs – Nyla, a Rottweiler mix, King, a Pit Bull and Ruby, a Rottweiler.
Although very different from each other, I enjoyed painting all three of these beauties – from Nyla's gorgeous textured coat, to King's regal pose and Ruby's wonderful soft eyes.
Originally bred to herd livestock and pull carts, today's Rottweiler is commonly used as a search and rescue dog, guide dog, guard dog and police dog. One of the oldest of the herding breeds, this breed is known for it's great disposition, eagerness to work and exceptional strength.
The Pit Bull was originally bred for gameness and strength. Often given a bad rap in the media, this breed can be as sweet and loving as any of the other breeds.
This large sized portrait will surely be a stunning conversation piece in their home and serve as a fitting tribute to three very special dogs the family can enjoy for years to come.
