One of the many things I love about painting custom horse and dog portraits is discovering which breed I'll have the pleasure of painting next. Some are personal favourites and others are a fun challenge. Breeds I haven't had the opportunity to paint before are always enjoyable and at the top of my list.
I was recently commissioned to paint a portrait of Jubal, a Doberman Pinscher, for Charissa in Fort St. John, British Columbia. Intended as a surprise gift for her boyfriend's birthday, Jubal marked the first Doberman portrait I've had the opportunity of painting.
A working dog breed, the Doberman was originally bred by a German tax collector to serve as his protector while he collected taxes in dangerous areas. Known for their intelligence, this breed has ranked among the most intelligent dog breeds and has scored the highest rank on trainability in various studies.
With a wonderful expression, bright eyes and a shiny black coat there were so many great details to appreciate in this Doberman's portrait. It was my pleasure to paint this handsome boy and I hope it's recipient will enjoy this painting for years to come.
