There's just something about a dappled grey horse that tugs at my heart. From all the various shades of grey to the unique and beautiful patterns created by the dapples, painting greys is always challenging but oh so much fun!
I was recently commissioned to paint the portrait of a lovely mare by the name of Ferrari K. With almost every shade of grey imaginable in her coat, this gorgeous lady was truly a pleasure to paint. Sadly, Ferrari K passed away not too long ago. A special mare for owner Kim Vandrish, a portrait of her beloved girl was the perfect keepsake.
As her name suggests, Ferrari K was a descendant of the well-known stallion, Popeye K. Her dam, Rannelle K, is by Popeye K himself and interestingly enough makes the second portrait I do of one of Rannelle K's offspring. Handsome Benson K is also out of Rannelle K.
Known for passing on beautiful confirmation, lovely movement and a correct jump, it's no wonder there are many Popeye K babies in the world today. While I might be a bit partial to this stallion since my own horse is out of Popeye K mare, I can honestly say the Popeye babies I've had the pleasure of knowing and riding have been nothing short of lovely.
Originally born and bred locally in Ashton, Ontario, Popeye K has been the stallion of choice for many horse owners in the area. Evidenced especially during any Ottawa area hunter/jumper show, when winning and placing entries frequently include the letter "K" at the end of their show names.
One of my favourite horse portraits to date, I'm very pleased with the way this one turned out. I hope it will bring Kim much happiness in its new place in her home.
