Another of the season’s Christmas portraits, I had the pleasure of painting tiny Casey for Tina in Kingston, Ontario. This painting is the first of two portraits I am scheduled to paint for her of her precious pooches.
Casey, a Shih Tzu, lays on a red velvet pillow in this portrait that his sweet sibling will also be painted with. The two portraits will hang alongside a horizontal portrait of another one of Tina’s fur babies, completing the trio of pups.
Always a challenging breed to paint, between their continuously growing coat (no two reference photos ever seem like the same dog) and light coloured fur that’s difficult to photograph and tends to camouflage body shape. This little guy however, who surely only weighed around 10 pounds at the time, was a pleasure to paint. Fresh from a trip to the groomers, with a trimmed body and snout and hair neatly cut away from around his large, round eyes, Casey’s features are clearly defined.
All in all, a sweet portrait Tina will be able to enjoy for many years to come!
