A wise man once said, "The only constant in the universe is change."
The unexpected loss of a beloved animal can be especially hard. Photos and videos become increasingly precious as we know new ones will never be taken. A custom portrait of a special animal is a perfect new keepsake to treasure and enjoy.
I'm pleased to share a portrait, commissioned by Sara, of her beautiful mare Abel Girl Z, aka Abelline and Princess. Sadly, Abelline passed away recently and as with all strong bonds and partnerships, the loss of this mare was especially difficult.
An up-and-coming young rider, Sara regularly competes in the 1.30m jumpers throughout the USA, aboard various trusted partners. Sometimes catch-riding for clients or competing on her own horses, she has had great results in the ring and recently won some big classes.
When Sara approached me to create a formal portrait of Abelline, I was excited to work on this special tribute piece of her lovely mare.
When starting a commission, I usually like to start building up the finer details of the eyes of the portrait subject. They say the eyes are the window to the soul and working on them first is almost like bringing my subject to life on the canvas.
Gorgeous Abelline was a joy to paint, from her wonderful expression and soft, doe-like eyes to the fine details on her leather bridle. Her velvety nose and flea-bitten grey coat help to give the portrait depth and softness.
We think the princess would approve of her portrait too!
